The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Story of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church.
We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity.
Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory.
Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary’s share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven.

St Vincent de Paul Food 4 Health Program
EVERYONE DESERVES CONSISTENT ACCESS TO ENOUGH FOOD FOR AN ACTIVE, HEALTHY LIFE.
According to the North Texas Food Bank, 1 in 7 Texans are forced to choose between buying food, medications, and paying basic living expenses. Inconsistent access to adequate amounts of nutritious food negatively impacts the health of individuals of all ages. Having to choose between food and paying bills puts these persons at risk for physical and behavioral health problems, lost work days, and serious complications or exacerbations of their condition. The burden of choosing between paying bills and buying food can be lessened for persons who participate in the Food 4 Health program offered by the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVdP), St Francis of Assisi Conference. Eating healthy foods and staying active are beneficial to all persons regardless of age.
WHERE THERE IS HOPE
Significant unexpected setbacks such as illness/accident/death, job loss, hours cut at work, spouse abandonment, forced early retirement can happen to anyone, at any time. Coupled with the reduced household income are feelings of loss, anxiety, depression, and despair. The men and women of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) offer real assistance with compassionate hearts to persons who are in crisis regardless of their race, religion, gender, political opinion, age, or disability. We make person-to-person visits via web or video conferencing (during COVID 19 pandemic) to those requesting assistance, to gain first-hand knowledge of the person's situation and their greatest need, and to ensure the best use of available funds are targeted to the most needy. Maintenance of the confidentiality and dignity of the persons we serve is core to SVdP's work.

Ac cording to the North Texas Food Bank, over 15% of Denton and Collin County residents worry that their food would run out or would not last before they got money to buy more.
