Hurricane Harvey Donations

The outpouring of prayers and support for those affected by Hurricane Harvey has been inspiring. Thank you to all who are living your Christian faith and helping those who are in need. 

We have received the following guidance from the St Vincent de Paul Council president Sean Meyers. It is important to note that St Vincent de Paul is NOT a first responder organization, rather, we are in it for the long haul and to help people as they transition from this crisis.

The immediate need is money. For those who are able, please donate to the SVdP Disaster Relief efforts. 

In addition to monetary donations, the St Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Plano (3305 N Central Expressway #280)  is a designated collection center for the Hurricane Harvey evacuees in the Dallas area shelters.  If you have items to donate, this is a great place to bring them where they can be sorted and brought to the centers as needed.  Please do not bring items directly to the shelters as they do not have the resources or room to take them.  

The Thrift Store also needs volunteers to help with sorting items being donated.  The Thrift Stores are open 10:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sundays. To volunteer, please go online to svdpdallas.org  and complete the volunteer application. Anyone volunteering should wear closed toed shoes.  

Please note: If you wish to donate items, the Thrift Stores can not accept mattresses, box-springs, TVs or perishable food.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Frisco Conference, will join the SVdP Council of Dallas to Walk for the Poor on Saturday, September 30th at 9:30 am on the University of Dallas campus.

The Impact of St Vincent de Paul

Each and every week, St Vincent de Paul provides assistance to those in need in and around Frisco. In 2016, St Vincent de Paul provided $126,754 in assistance to over 200 families. 

While we are a Catholic lay organization, we provide assistance to all those in need, regardless of ethnic or religious background. 

By way of example, for the week of April 13th, 2017, here is a summary of the assistance St Vincent de Paul was able to provide:

1. Provided rent assistance for a single mother who's working hours were cut.  This prevented her from being evicted from her apartment.
    
2. Provided assistance with rent for a single mother who is on unemployment.
    
3. Provided assistance with rent for a single mother who recently lost her job and has applied for unemployment, but is not yet receiving any payments.
    
4. Provided assistance with Electric utility for a single mother who had her money stolen.
    
5. Provided rental assistance for a family who had suffered a financial setback after a car accident. 
    
6. Partnered with Frisco Family Services to provided assistance with Rent and Electric for a single mother who's unemployment claim was denied.

For the above cases, St Vincent de Paul provided $3,696 in assistance for 6 adults and 9 children.

In addition to prayers, we are often able to connect them with additional assistance beyond what meager assistance we can provide.

This aid may take the form of intervention, consultation, or often through direct dollar or in-kind service. An essential precept of the Society's work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served. The Society recognizes that it must assume, also, a role of advocacy for those who are defenseless or voiceless. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is one of the oldest charitable organizations in the world, founded in 1833 in France by seven students including Frederic Ozanam. The young Frederic, a Catholic, wanted to help the poor of all religions during the industrial revolution. He also wanted to improve the lives of his peers by urging them to perform works of charity rather than simply talk about what should be done to help the needy.

Our members, called Vincentians, continually strive to promote the dignity of the people they serve while helping alleviate their suffering and distress and working to help correct conditions that cause these problems. An early morning traffic accident on the Dallas North Tollway delayed the St. Vincent de Paul Mobile Thrift Store that was originally scheduled for April 4th. 

The Mobile Thrift Store has been rescheduled for this Sunday, April 17, so you can buy that perfect Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation or Wedding gift.

This coincides with already scheduled Bundle Sunday, so that you can drop off your gently used items that you choose to donate at the same time!
